BUYING

Would you buy this £35k SUV instead of a BMW?

The more useful question is not whether LEPAS can suddenly become BMW. It is what happens when you put a £34,900 L8 next to a new BMW and ask exactly what your money is buying.

THE SHORT VERSION

The £35k BMW comparison isn't quite what it sounds like.

If you have around £35,000 to spend on a new SUV, BMW is an obvious brand to look at. But the current UK BMW X1 starts above £37,000, while the plug-in hybrid X1 sits considerably higher again.

That makes the LEPAS L8 an interesting comparison — not because it is literally the same car as a BMW X1, but because the two approaches to spending your money are very different.

£34,900 LEPAS L8 Essence starting OTR price
£37,525+ BMW X1 starting OTR price currently listed by BMW UK
£47,645+ BMW X1 xDrive25e PHEV starting price currently listed by BMW UK
The important distinction These are not perfectly like-for-like vehicles. The L8 is a large five-seat SUV with a 2,800mm wheelbase, while the BMW X1 is a smaller premium crossover. The useful comparison is therefore about the ownership proposition, not pretending the cars are identical.

So what does your money actually buy?

At first glance, the L8's £34,900 starting price looks like the headline. But price alone doesn't tell you whether the car makes sense.

A buyer should compare at least six things:

  • How much car you physically get for the money
  • The powertrain and electric driving capability
  • Standard equipment versus optional extras
  • Warranty and roadside support
  • Servicing and dealer support
  • What happens when you eventually sell or part-exchange it

LEPAS L8 vs BMW X1: the numbers

The table below uses the current UK manufacturer information available in September 2026. BMW figures can vary by engine, trim and specification, so always check the exact vehicle you are configuring.

The first surprise: a new BMW isn't really a £35k alternative

This is where the original "£35k SUV versus a BMW" headline needs some context.

BMW currently lists the X1 from around £37,525. That is already roughly £2,600 above the L8 Essence before you start comparing equipment or powertrains.

And if you specifically want a BMW X1 plug-in hybrid, the price gap becomes much larger. BMW currently lists the X1 xDrive25e from around £47,645.

The question worth asking If the reason you are considering the L8 is that you want a PHEV SUV for around £35,000, are you actually comparing it with a new BMW — or are you comparing it with a used BMW?

That distinction matters enormously.

If you specifically want a PHEV, the comparison changes

This is arguably the most interesting part of the comparison.

The L8 launches in the UK as a plug-in hybrid with an 18.4kWh battery and up to 56 miles of WLTP electric range.

The BMW X1 is also available as a plug-in hybrid, but the current X1 xDrive25e uses a 14.2kWh battery and is listed with around 49–52 miles of WLTP electric range depending on configuration.

So the conversation isn't simply "Chinese car versus German car". Both are using a petrol engine and electric power to solve the same basic problem: make short everyday journeys potentially much more dependent on electricity while retaining petrol-powered flexibility for longer trips.

But don't mistake WLTP for your commute

A quoted electric range is a laboratory figure designed for comparison. Your actual result can change with temperature, speed, heating or air conditioning, traffic, terrain, wheel choice and driving style.

If you drive 25–35 miles per day and can charge at home, the L8's PHEV setup could be particularly relevant. If you regularly drive 200 miles between charges or have nowhere convenient to plug in, the calculation changes.

The second surprise: the L8 isn't trying to win on badge prestige

This is probably the biggest psychological difference between the two buying decisions.

With a BMW, part of what you are buying is the BMW ownership ecosystem: the brand, dealer network, established resale market, familiar servicing infrastructure and the expectations that come with a premium manufacturer.

With the L8, the proposition is different. LEPAS is a new UK brand, backed by Chery International, and is building its UK dealer network during 2026.

That means the buyer is making a trade-off between an established premium brand and a much newer entrant offering a different specification and warranty proposition.

Neither of those facts should be ignored.

Equipment: don't compare the brochures — compare the exact cars

This is one of the easiest mistakes to make when comparing a new LEPAS with a BMW.

A BMW headline price is not necessarily the BMW you actually want. Moving between trims and adding options can change the price considerably.

The right comparison is therefore:

  • Exact BMW model
  • Exact BMW trim
  • Engine and drivetrain
  • Optional equipment
  • Final on-the-road price
  • Finance contribution or manufacturer offer
  • Servicing package
  • Insurance cost

Then compare that finished BMW against the exact L8 specification you would actually buy.

Don't compare a fully equipped L8 with a £37k BMW headline price. Compare the equipment you genuinely want and the final transaction price of both cars.

Warranty: this is one area where the numbers are very different

LEPAS currently gives the L8 a 7-year/100,000-mile vehicle warranty and an 8-year/100,000-mile warranty for the high-voltage battery. Up to seven years of RAC roadside assistance is also included.

BMW's standard new-car warranty is three years with unlimited mileage. BMW also provides three years of roadside assistance with new vehicles.

BMW offers additional warranty and service products, while its PHEV battery coverage varies by battery generation and model.

This doesn't automatically make one warranty "better" for every buyer. Warranty terms, exclusions, claim processes and the quality and availability of local repair support matter just as much as the headline duration.

Servicing: the part of the ownership equation people often forget

A car's purchase price is only the beginning.

You should ask both brands:

  • How often does the car need servicing?
  • How much does each scheduled service cost?
  • Is a service plan included?
  • What is included and excluded?
  • How far away is the nearest authorised workshop?
  • How long would you expect to wait for an appointment?
  • What happens if a specialist component needs replacing?

BMW currently offers Service Inclusive packages for the X1, with a three-year package listed from £455 and longer packages available. LEPAS has also introduced service plans and early ownership offers for the L8, so the exact offer available at the point you buy should be checked rather than assumed.

Dealer network: established advantage versus growing network

This is one of the clearest differences between the brands.

BMW has an established UK retailer and service network. That matters if you travel frequently, move house or need specialist support away from your local dealer.

LEPAS is building its UK network as the brand launches. The company has targeted around 60 dealerships by the end of 2026 and around 90 by the end of 2027.

For an L8 buyer, therefore, the useful question isn't simply "Does LEPAS have dealers?"

It is:

"Where is my nearest LEPAS sales and service facility, and what happens if I move or travel?"

Check the answer before placing an order.

Finance: don't compare monthly payments in isolation

This is another area where a £35k versus BMW comparison can become misleading. A lower monthly payment does not necessarily mean a cheaper car.

As of September 2026, LEPAS is advertising a representative PCP example on the L8 Essence based on a £34,900 OTR price, £2,999 customer deposit, 48 monthly payments of £398.99 and a £14,003 optional final payment, at 1.9% representative APR, subject to the offer's terms.

BMW is also running finance campaigns on selected models. The exact rate, deposit, mileage allowance, optional final payment and manufacturer contribution need to be compared for the actual car you are considering.

For any PCP comparison, write down all of these numbers:

  • Cash price
  • Customer deposit
  • Finance contribution
  • Number of payments
  • Monthly payment
  • Optional final payment
  • Total amount payable
  • Annual mileage allowance
  • Excess mileage charge
  • Any purchase or administration fees

Only then do you have a meaningful comparison.

What about buying a used BMW instead?

This is the question that can completely change the decision.

If your budget is genuinely around £35,000, you don't have to buy a new BMW. The used market opens up a much wider range of BMW models and specifications.

That creates a fundamentally different comparison:

Choice What you're getting The question to ask
New LEPAS L8 New car, PHEV technology, long manufacturer warranty and current technology Am I comfortable buying into a newer brand?
New BMW X1 Established premium brand, established dealer network and new-car warranty How much equipment will I need to add to get the specification I want?
Used BMW Potentially a higher BMW model or richer specification for the same budget What age, mileage, warranty and running costs am I accepting?

A three-year-old BMW X3, for example, is a completely different proposition from a new X1. It may give you the badge and driving characteristics you want, but it also means you are comparing a used premium vehicle with a brand-new LEPAS carrying a full manufacturer warranty.

Where the BMW argument is genuinely strong

A serious comparison shouldn't pretend the L8 eliminates every reason someone might choose BMW.

BMW brings several established advantages:

Established ownership ecosystem

BMW has a mature UK dealer and service network, established parts supply and a large installed customer base.

Brand familiarity

Many buyers already know what they expect from BMW's products, dealerships, finance operation and servicing experience.

Used-market choice

The established BMW market gives buyers a huge range of nearly-new and used vehicles at different prices and mileages.

Driving character

BMW offers a broad range of models and powertrains, including versions aimed at buyers who place a high priority on handling and performance.

Where the L8 proposition is genuinely different

The L8's appeal is not simply that it is cheaper.

The interesting part is how much of the specification and electrified powertrain is being packaged into the starting price.

Longer headline warranty

The L8's 7-year/100,000-mile vehicle warranty is substantially longer on paper than BMW's standard three-year unlimited-mileage vehicle warranty.

PHEV capability at a lower entry price

The L8 offers an 18.4kWh PHEV system and up to 56 miles WLTP electric range from £34,900.

High specification focus

LEPAS has positioned the L8 around a relatively straightforward trim strategy, rather than relying on a long list of individual options.

New-car proposition

At this budget, the L8 gives you the option of buying new rather than entering the used premium-car market.

But there is a risk you shouldn't ignore

The biggest unknown for a buyer isn't necessarily the engineering of the car. It is what ownership of a relatively new UK brand looks like several years from now.

That includes:

  • How quickly the dealer network expands
  • How well residual values hold up
  • How easy parts are to obtain
  • How software and connected services are supported long term
  • How the brand performs in the UK used-car market
  • How customers experience warranty and aftersales support

None of these questions can be answered perfectly for a brand that is only starting its UK journey. That is precisely why they should form part of your buying research.

The depreciation question

This is one area where it is sensible to be cautious.

BMW has a long-established UK used-car market, which gives buyers a large amount of historical data to look at when assessing used values.

LEPAS does not have the same UK history yet.

That doesn't tell you exactly what an L8 will be worth in three or five years. It simply means there is less historical evidence available.

If you're financing the L8 on PCP Pay particular attention to the optional final payment, mileage allowance and total amount payable. Don't assume that a strong-looking monthly payment means the car will automatically have strong equity at the end.

Who should actually consider the L8?

Instead of trying to declare a winner, think about which ownership scenario looks most like yours.

If this sounds like you... The question to investigate
You want a new PHEV SUV around £35k How does the L8's real-world electric range fit your daily mileage?
You can charge at home How much of your weekly driving could realistically be electric?
You want a premium badge Would you rather buy a newer, higher-spec car or an established premium brand?
You change cars frequently What does the likely residual-value position mean for your finance agreement?
You keep cars for 5–7 years Does the L8's long warranty outweigh your concerns about the newer brand?
You travel throughout the UK Where are your nearest LEPAS sales and service locations?
You are considering a used BMW Would the benefits of a new car and full warranty outweigh the BMW badge?

The showroom test: don't ask which badge is better

If you test drive both, use the same questions for each car.

  1. What is the exact on-the-road price?
  2. What equipment is standard?
  3. What equipment would I need to pay extra for?
  4. What is the exact warranty?
  5. Where is my nearest authorised service centre?
  6. How much does the service plan cost?
  7. What is the insurance group?
  8. What is the finance total amount payable?
  9. What is the optional final payment?
  10. What happens if I return the car at the end of the PCP?
  11. What happens if I exceed the mileage?
  12. What would I realistically get for the car after three years?

The £35k question is actually three different questions

By now, it should be clear why the original "would you buy this instead of a BMW?" question doesn't have a simple answer.

There are actually three separate decisions:

1. New LEPAS vs new BMW

You're comparing different approaches to equipment, price, warranty, powertrain and brand.

2. New LEPAS vs used BMW

You're comparing a new-car warranty and latest technology against the established premium-brand used market.

3. L8 PHEV vs a different type of car entirely

You may discover that your priorities point towards a full EV, another PHEV, a conventional petrol SUV or even a different body style.

That is why the best buying decision starts with how you use the car rather than which badge you want on the bonnet.

Before you decide

Compare the exact cars, exact specifications and exact finance agreements. Prices, finance campaigns and equipment can change. Manufacturer claims and WLTP figures should be treated as reference figures rather than guarantees of your actual costs or electric range.
